Chapter Thirteen

Miss Kristian was relieved to hear her first assignment would be working part-time at the feed mill office, arranged at her father’s request. As before, she and her father rode the community shuttle into town. She reacquainted herself with the office staff including Mr. Findlay, who had married a woman from town. Her tasks were light and she wondered when her real work would start.

A week later Mr. Porter drove into town. Miss Kristian felt excitement as she donned her overalls. She thought of Miss Rhona every day and missed her greatly. However, anticipating work on the snowmobile and taking an active role in her future helped lift her gloom.

“Your spirits seem better today,” Mr. Porter remarked. “True mechanics can’t wait to get back to work. Must be your calling.”

He drove them to his modest home situated several miles out of town. Surrounding the property were thick stands of pine, their boughs catching the snow flurries before they touched ground. Miss Kristian followed the men to a workshop in a detached garage. Inside, parts were scattered everywhere along with the skeleton of a snowmobile.

“Is this the one you pulled out of the forest?”

“No. This is my old one. Look over there.” He pointed toward the back corner at a tangle of parts and twisted metal. “Our challenge is going to be the fuel intake. This old machine of mine’s a two-stroke. We need to convert it to ethanol or a biofuel-ethanol mix. This seat here is for one person.” He pointed at an item resting on the garage floor. “Rat’s nest is what it is. There’s a job for you. Strip off that outer layer of material and we’ll figure out how to add a second seat to the frame. What do you think, Mr. Browne? Should we go for height or length?”

Miss Kristian picked up a hint of annoyance in his voice, a reminder of the change in plans.

“Where’s the diagram? My daughter needs to see what it looked like before we got to this point. I’d like her input.”

“It’s on the counter.”

Mr. Browne retrieved the papers and showed his daughter a schematic illustrating how the parts would fit back together. Modifications would be needed in the form of a bigger fuel tank, or room for storage tanks, plus the conversion from one seat to two.

“If we raise the rear seat,” she said, “we’ll have room underneath for an extra fuel tank.”

“And if you sit up high, you’re in for a bad ride. The cold and wind will be merciless.”

“Could we raise the height of the windshield?”

“Yes, but then you’ve got more wind resistance up front and reduced miles per gallon. Everything’s a trade-off.”

“I’ll think on it.”

She took a utility knife from the tool chest and sliced into the seat, noting how the material was stitched together. None of it was salvageable. Rats had clawed several holes through the seat and built a warm nest inside. It was empty of vermin. Donning a pair of gloves, she went after the rotted padding.
